X-Ray Image Quality Indicator

An Image Quality Indicator (IQI) , commonly known as a penetrameter, is a reference standard device used in industrial radiography (X-ray or Gamma-ray testing) . It is not a flaw detector itself, but a tool to ensure the radiographic image (radiograph) is of sufficient quality to reveal flaws if they are present .

The primary purpose of an IQI is to verify the sensitivity of the overall radiographic testing system .

Common Material Codes: They are often designated by material codes such as:

  · Al: For Aluminum 
  · Cu: For Copper 
  · Ti: For Titanium 
  · Ni: For Nickel 
· Specialty Materials: For inspecting castings or welds, the IQI material is selected based on the parent metal's density group .
